How can the horror of the war in Ukraine be analysed without falling into simplifications? And what could an emancipatory politics possibly look like in the age of a global war regime? Raúl Sánchez Cedillo dares a critical advance beyond the usual discourse.

His book This War Will Not End in Ukraine (written in Spanish and translated into German) sparks a long-overdue debate about what an antiwar stance can look like today. It argues that in an increasingly chaotic and devastated world, peace is unthinkable without a radical social and ecological change of direction.

Instead of taking unconditional sides with a party of war, Sánchez Cedillo’s political perspective centers on attempts to create new social institutions that are not based on the exploitation of humans and the environment. Against the all-pervasive militarisation, the book fights for a socioecological common, for a democratic power from below and a constituent peace.

About the book

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Ukraine has been exposed to incessant devastation: war, fascism, anti-Semitism, Stalinism, exploitation, nuclear contamination and poverty. With the war of aggression, this history of suffering has been cruelly perpetuated since February 2022, with global repercussions. Against the omnipresent militarisation and its propagandistic simplifications, Raúl Sánchez Cedillo dares to examine urgently what an emancipatory politics can look like in the face of the emergence of a continental war regime.

This War Will Not End in Ukraine demonstrates, in historical, geographical and conceptual terms, the relationships between modern war, empires, subjectivities and their machines. It also dismantles the neoliberal and neuropolitical, racist, misogynist and anti-LGBTIQ scaffolding that supports the war regime and its capitalist command as a whole. Neither utopian nor voluntarist, the book argues for an ecology of the common, for new institutions of democratic counter-power, for a constituent peace, starting from the social inventions that make a political perspective possible in the first place.
