Lluís Companys Race, organised by the Fundació Neus Català which has continued the Alternativa project and co-hosted by transform! europe, has its origins in 2008 to pay tribute to the Barcelona People’s Olympics project of 1936.
The People’s Olympics were to be held in Barcelona from 19 to 26 July 1936 as a response to the Berlin Olympics, which had become a tool of apologia for fascism and xenophobia. But General Franco’s fascist military coup, produced 24 hours earlier, prevented this fraternal project from developing. However, many of the athletes who had already moved to Barcelona decided to join the militia as a sign of solidarity, thus creating the foundation of what would later become the International Brigades.
The Lluís Companys Race, which is held in its face-to-face version at the Serrahima Stadium and Montjuïc in Barcelona, also offers all those who cannot attend this event in person to do so symbolically with a remote test with the App ViRace.
Another year fighting hate speech and sexism in sport,
another year we will fight again, we will suffer again, we will run again next November 4 and 5!
